The video work ‘Hier’ (Here) by Clemens Wittkowski visualizes our soul in an unprecedented way. On the surface of an aging children’s blackboard, on which people normally scribble, draw, calculate, and write, we follow a hand acting with white chalk, observing and listening almost distantly to a trickling fragility that sets in in all respects. After a vehement opening as a legacy of the writing material, the calligraphy of the handwriting becomes a cultural expression, the written text a sensitive credo: “Das Traurige im Schönen. Das Entzückende im Schmerz.“ (The sad in the beautiful. The delightful in pain.)
