The video work ‘Disorderly’ by Clemens Wittkowski explores the human longing for security in life while simultaneously subverting the already ambivalent relationship between order and disorder from a deliberately inverted perspective. This new perspective creates different structures and impulses. We seek orientation, explanation, and plausibility by nature. Sometimes we look for answers even though we don’t yet know what questions we actually need to ask ourselves. Sometimes we find ourselves in a certain place even though we don’t yet know where we actually stand. Sometimes we even want to be something we’re not. Too often, we fence ourselves in and talk about guardrails in relativistic terms. We want to be safe, even though we subconsciously feel that only one thing is truly certain: growing uncertainty. It is our only elixir of life and protects us from decay and from the inability to live.
