Lieben

The video work ‘Lieben’ (Love) by Clemens Wittkowski takes us to a very familiar psychological place – to the self of all of us. The view of an agitated seascape with demanding waves, a supposedly clearing sky, and filigree sediment moments underwater is permeated by a constantly rephrasing soundscape and composed fragments in German verse form: “Lieben. Lieben lassen. Lieben lieben. Lieben leben. Lieben enden. Hell, yes! Nein! Nochmal von vorn.“ (Love. Let love. Love to love. Live love. Loves end. Hell, yes! No! Let’s start again.) Interpreted in each case by a female and a male voice, the spoken word is the emotional impulse for the overall sequential dramaturgy. Loves – relationships and interactions – are constantly reproduced by us in new and varied ways. Sensitively, we find ourselves in a transitory space that everyone wants to get to know but often wants to leave again quickly. Because it is inexplicably honest in its ups and downs. However, ‘love’/’loves’ accompanies us throughout our lives. As the most essential element of our engagement with ourselves and others.
